Wet and chilled out. Packing up to spend the weekend at Flathead lake.
Last couple days have been dry and clear. This wet stuff makes it harder, much harder. But lake fishing in the rain, kinda makes sense in a perverse way.

I remember my youth. This time of year. Where I sit. Ruckus neighborhood. The air filled with kid-sounds. Old traditions being remembered. The apple harvest. A cycle complete. The garden all but done. A frost last night. The end of season. This time of year. The work we considered drudgery. “Putting-Up”. I remember my youth.
I remember my youth. This year I revisit Autumn. The summer a memory. A distinct chill in the air. Follow the sun to stay warm. The smell of death. After such fertility. As the cold returns. My buddy Chris and I share a beer. Delightful local brews abound here. Temperatures drop. I remember my youth.
I remember my youth. A picnic table covered with tomatoes. The last picking. Many rotting. I was the little kid in the pack. The big kids started throwing rotten tomatoes at each other. I got terribly mauled by my ketchup-tossing siblings. It was great. I love the smell of tomatoes. I remember my youth.
I remember my youth. Granny’s drop-leaf table. Extended to its max. Covered by mason jars. Granny and mom steaming and preparing cartons of jars. The pickles, and tomatoes, and relishes. The jams and preserves. My favorite was apple-butter. A proper root-cellar, out-back when I was a kid. A basement, later on. I remember my youth.
I remember my youth. Cabbages were cut up and processed here today. Some 45 pounds of “slaw’ is on the ferment. The vegetables on the table here are Old-Fashioned. The traditions of old, remembered. Consult Google on the formula for slaw. My mother and grandmother simply knew. They had an Almanac. I remember my youth.
I remember my youth. The youth I am in. And I feel strangely youthful. The mountain air. The positive energy. The Mountains. The Mountains. Strangely Youthful! Willis called it “middle-youth”. He don’t like being called middle-aged. So in my middle-youth I revel in the senses. An unknown bird chirps near by. I remember my youth.
I remember my youth. The youth I am in. Being able to pursue foolish fancies. Riding motorcycles, Spending heaps of time with the pups. Now tramping around the mountains. The youth I am in does have aches and pains. I am a geriatric-in-training. I huff and puff. Mountains, not easily seduced. I remember my youth.
I remember my youth. Unlimited energy. Unlimited wind. Where does it go? How many years in the boardroom? The ivory tower. Flying high-class. Living large. And growing large. Becoming incapable. Oh, no! The elevator is broken. Must climb the stairs. Oh, no! Electric-carts you travel with. Don’t need to walk. I remember my youth.
I remember my youth. In Missoula Montana. The mountains surround. The table where I sit covered by winter-squash. Green and orange. Curly-cue stems. Knobbled and knotted skin. They are the last harvest. A large yearling doe just jumped the fence. I started. She calmly nibbled and daintily sprang on. Amazing, amazing! I remember my youth.

Ok, Sunday in Missoula. Was up and humping yesterday. Ostensibly grouse hunting it was more of shock treatment for the fat-fuck. I survived and was well enough this morn to take off up the range behind the house here. We’re at about 3300 feet. I clawed and trudged up to about 4300 ft. Once there I was happy that I got my wind back and had a merry tramp through and down the range.
I walked around the flats here quite a bit afterward to cool down. The flats are perfect for me. It’s the ridges and mostly “up” business of the walking that I am struggling with. I’ll know in a week or so if my wind will come. Will go looking for some 6000 ft. hikes this coming week.
Funny enough though, my thighs kept cramping up last night. A new experience for me. I have regular muscle cramps in my calf, but can remedy/ control this easily. But last night, while in bed, both my thigh muscles went into seizure. It would have been hilarious for any spectator. A crippled up old fart trying to scuttle out of bed and get upright. It was painful and difficult to stretch the cramp out. Hope to have it under control and not have a rerun of duo-thigh muscle cramps tonight.
I sit in the sun on Filardis’ back porch. It is 13 c / 55 f with a very warm sun. It frosted last night.
The neighborhood is smashing apples into cider tonight. We collected apples yesterday and today. The neighbors have set up a press. The first run-through was really guud. Full on communal smashing starts in about a half hour.
Missoula is a cool place. I guess college towns are often more eclectic than cattle towns. But folks here are of the ultra-fit elite, mentally and physically. Everyone runs, bikes, hikes, floats, drops, jumps, glides, paddles, swims, dances and read. They read a lot. We’re in no television suburbia.
Which I really like.
When I first got here I saw a fawn in the yard. I thought is novel/ cute. Well, the deer are here full time. If it was legal you could kill one with a hammer. The apple gig is about apple juice and bear control. If the apples stay on the trees or are left on the ground the bears will come in and there will be problems.
So the neighborhood sets a press up on the side of the road… We have about 5 bushels of apples already picked and washed. Everyone is busy in their yard denuding their tree. Kinda cool.
More later
Well, not really. Not yet…
But I am having a good time and feeling great. Current score is mountains 1/ Mike 0…
Got into Missoula last eve. Hung out at Chris and Cath’s place, went for good walk, felt good with my wind and general adaptability. I remind myself that the last time I was here I “managed” but left, after only two days of humping, totally fatigued and wasted. I felt like a puss.
I committed then to a fitness level capable of even contemplating mountain activities. Last year I came and went immediately to 6000 feet. I simply could not breath. I was disappointed in myself. And today feel much better. but I am starting slow.
Followed Chris on a grouse shoot… Got out about noon. The weather was crisp and clear. Good walking weather. We may have been at 4000 ft. We took off straight up. Chris carrying a beautiful old Parker 12 gauge. I carried a pretty little Ithaca 20 gauge.
Chris is an animal and has amazing walking skills. Me, well, I guess for an apprentice geriatric I don’t do too bad. But within minutes I am shedding layers. Sweating on my glasses. Cursing my slick-soled work boots.
Gotta get geared up! I panted and sweated and followed Chris up and over a granite saddle in well logged land. Up and over and down into a little drainage. Or such was the theory.
Up was an issue for this geriatric in training… I panted and wheezed but kept a steady (SLOW) pace. I never saw reason to load the little 20 gauge so found it to be an inadequate at best walking stick. But it did help and I did carry it up, and over and under then through, to a neat little promontory with caves and crevices.
Chris let me recover my wind so I played lizard in the sun. Then we headed down. I slipped and racked my elbow at one point. Drew blood. Made me laugh… Mountains one/ Mike Zero…
The ancient landscape and the well used and abused terrain was evidence of a fantastically fertile land. A land of power and age.
We did not see any grouse. we collected some fire wood and went home to a BBQ. Its 1030pm my time and I think I am well ready for a sleep.
I must comment on the Filardi household I am privileged to be part of… I woke this morning before 8am to kids jumping hollering and making good kids sounds. It sounded like my home. I get kid-hugs from Leo and Wren on call. Wren and I went apple picking this morning. She showed me a big pile of bear “poo”. When I asked if it was griz or black bear she stated with authority, “Black bear of course”.
I went out today without my promised bear spray can strapped to my chest… Chris tells me to negotiate if/ when we/ I encounter a bear. I understand this but Grace is a bit psychzy about it so I did promise to carry a magnum of bear deterrent. I’ll go buy one tomorrow.
And go to bed now. I feel good and look forward to more of this Montana madness…

Been way too long since I been blogg’n. And soo much going on too! Usually I don’t blog when I am not bizzy. Now, we been too, too bizzy.
Where we been, what we been doing…
Been on the road now for 18 days. Have been traveling with Grace, Annie, Angelo and Mendoza. It has been fun.
Gotta pass my thanks to all the family… The ol’ folks that make it all so special and memorable. M&J and their young’ns, H&R especially for taking Grace on the ride on yer harley. D&A for their, as ever, unparalleled hospitality. Of course Judy for her many massages. The Goodrich family for simply being so delightfully disfunctional. Also, granny Barb Bell, Jeanie and her trio of miscreants, Tonia and Ross, and lastly: Apologies for not seeing everyone… Molly, Nicki, Bryce, Jim, Tami, Jameson, Jim, Kacey, Jackie… and everyone else who I did not even have time to think about… it is a big family and though a couple weeks sound like a long time, it ain’t.
Highlights have been the time with the old folks, especially the trip down memory lane to Dubuque. I remember being a kid and hanging up above the Mississippi at Eagle Point park with my grandfather. I remember paying to use the binoculars there. Deja’ Vue? Or Tradition?
Hanging with Katie, Brian, Addie, Zoë and Mikey was a trip. I am into kids, as everyone knows, and Katie’s kids are all good pups, all keepers. One day I let Grace and Annie go fry plastic at the mall with Katie. I kept the kids all day. We played in the pool at the hotel then, to everyone’s surprise, walked from outside of town to the folk’s place, making a number of stops along the way. All up we did about 5 miles without a complaint or anyone, even 3 yr. old Mikey, needing to be carried. My glutei were tight and sore the next day. The kids were all fine.
We got a great weekend at Angela’s pad by the lake. The best thing here (besides beating Leaven and Stark at golf… high score wins, right?) was Doug bought nice air rifles for the boys. They each had their old “Daisy” rifles, just like I had as a kid. We set up a target range and everyone had a good time.
We did a quick stop over at Vegas. We went to see Nathan Burton’s magic show. It was great! If you every have a chance this dude is funny and impressive. We also saw the Lion King musical. Magnificent is all I can say. Vegas is basically a dump but the boys had a grand time and we were all happy to travel on…
Grace and the family flew off to Fiji and on to Honiara last eve. I am now sitting in Denver waiting for my flight to Missoula. I’ll spend a few weeks there tramping around the mountains, fishing, hunting and generally cleansing my spirit.
It has all been good, very, very good… More later, and many thanks to all n’ sundry…

Last time we had a “peaceful demonstration” like this, china-town got blazed…
PM Philip has been called upon to remove the Finance minister and the Aid and planning minister.
The planned peaceful protest march by the Malaita Ma’asina Forum (MMF) to the Prime Minister will be staged on tomorrow.
This was confirmed by the MMF General Secretary William Gua yesterday. It should start at 9.30am from Art Gallery to the Prime Minister Office.
The protest march is part of a move, calling on the Prime Minister (PM) to remove his two senior Government Ministers, Minister of Finance and Treasury Gordon Darcy Lilo and Minister of planning and Aid Coordination Snyder Rini
“The protest aims to show a formal protest to remove the two ministers immediately from the post,” Mr Gua said.
Mr Gua added their second demand is for the Prime Minister to remove the two advisors within the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force Executive (RSIPF).
MFF had given Prime Minister Philip up until 12 midday today to address the issues that we want.
He added they will make a move to prevent Prime Minister from leaving the country on Tuesday morning until their demands are met.
Mr Gua told The Solomon Star yesterday that they finally decide to hold the protest on Tuesday to speed up things and not to wait any longer.
He said the protest will be led by the MMF leaders and people who supported the idea to remove the two ministers from their current post.
Mr Gua said the protest will be called off if the two ministers and the RSIPF advisors are removed immediately.
“We will not protest if Prime Minister Danny Phillip removes the two ministers and the Police advisors. If not then the protest will continue as plan,” Mr Gua said.
“MMF cannot allow this nation to be governed by certain group of people”.
Mr Gua said if the PM fails to address the issues then he should might as well resign.
He said a notice had been issued to the police and Honiara City Council on 13 of March this year.
I must say, not the most pleasant hours I have spent in my life but definitely productive…
My hat is off to Maestro Turumakina. I must thank Ify and mom and dad and the boys and baby Toi for their enjoyable company.
Tu, it is an honour to be accepted by your lovely family… Life is indeed good.

Company truck seized, landowner and chief arrested
THE issue between the Gold Ridge upper downstream communities and the Company has erupted again after what was believed to be failed negotiations.Members of the communities turned up in force again on Thursday and re-loaded the road block.
They held a company vehicle and demanded that the company pay royalties for export of gold bars.
One disgruntled villager said there was an agreement in place and villagers wanted to know how many gold bars have been exported so far.
Police were deployed at the scene on Thursday who arrested the principal landowner and a chief.
Police remained at the scene until yesterday to monitor the developments.
The roadblock continued from Thursday through to yesterday.
A regular traveller to the area Desmond Rave of the Catholic communication told Solomon Star the disgruntled villagers used a vehicle and other debris to obstruct passage to the mine site at Obo’obo.
The matter started last week but was put under control when the two sides agreed to negotiate.
The management yesterday said they held talks with the communities but did not go into detail what was reached in their meetings.
Villagers from four upper downstream communities namely Tausoro, Taurarana, Mamasa and Leivatu had initially given the company seven days for the company to respond to their claims.
The letter written to the company cited by the Solomon Star stated that their claim is on grounds that the river (Matapona) they depend upon for washing, swimming, river food and other activities had been polluted.
The letter stated that due to the above reasons, the four communities agreed to demand a compensation of SBD$15.1 million.
Their calculation was based on the number of households in each community which totals 338.
Acting police commissioner Walter Kola said police will not tolerate people who take law into their own hands.
The lights all off, the doors open. Sea and wind sounds fill the air.
Then a big, damn moth, and I mean BIG, flies out of nowhere and attacks my laptop’s monitor. Scared the jiminy be-jeezuz outa me…

… I watch as Dylan trots around on his tip-toes. Now he is not terribly proficient at waking yet. He has still to learn that gravity never sleeps. But he trots around on his tip-toes.
He’s now doing the dare-devil high jump act. Thankfully his mom sits closer than I so I need only be amused as the dramas transpire. I have nick-named him houdini as he can simply disappear. I spent yesterday erecting barriers around the pool in his honour.
I am a bit distracted today. Not enjoying the kids to the fullest. Their noise has annoyed as much as entertained… Maybe a bit of a grump on or maybe just thinking about the next stint of travels.
Angelina is doing the 5 yr old 500 questions a minute thing as I type. The boys have been in a strange, almost testosterone poisoned, mood. They are into their dance and some of the modern dance may be a bit too mature for “children”.
Do I sound old-fashioned or out of date?
In the fence work I did: I cut up an old sheet of 1″ ply and laid in israeli type personal barriers about Dylan’s height. After I dug the sheet of ply out of the shed, I somehow thought I could grab it, swing it over my head, and walk away. I ended up calling for help. Dern thing was heavy.
So maybe not so much old-fashioned as just plain OLD…
… it is interesting, in a socio-economic sence, to study events that define…
Events that define a generation,
Events that define a Nation,
Events that define a global mentality…
September 11 is one of those days. For the sake of clarity I wish to review the matter, albeit superficially, from more than one view-point:
From the fundamental islamic mind-set we can see 9/11 as a day of victory and success. The evil oppressor as personified by the United States of America, got kicked fair and hard in the crotch.
The average western mind-set sees 9/11 as a time of change. Where the freedoms and the comfort zone enjoyed so long and so completely was irrevocably lost.
Thus, I feel we can agree, 9/11 is one of the amazing occurrences that shapes a planet.
Now, from the outside looking, I wish to point out that there are many reasons why the “western-world” is so terribly hated, despised and admired.
Remember, this is a socio-economic discussion:
Basic stats give us that 20% of the world consumes 80% of the resources. Now this is dandy if you be part of the 20% but there is a huge % of the planet that is saying, “… hey, wait a minute…”
Go to any Iowa High School and you’ll see why the western-world is so despised… How many of the high school kids hop in a car and drive away from school? To consider that a child, a youth of lets say 17 years, has the luxury of a car to go to school… well, hell… when I am hungry, my world is unstable, and I just buried another child… you can see where a certain jealous anger can set in.
The western-mind can often salve their buried but active conscience by making donations and such. But the fact that more people go without than have, on a planet of plenty, is a recipe for disaster. It boils quickly down to the old “have verses have-not” game.
If one travels and actually seeks an undertsanding of “difference” there can be a gaining of an insight, no matter how dim, of the way others exist.
It has been said that an existence is not a life.
I watched a late movie a few nights ago… “The Book of Eli”… 1) I do like D. Washington and 2) post- apocalypse tales have always been a favourite of mine… One line sticks out for me here… D. is rejecting the babe’s offer of sex… and he starts taking… ” … there was a time when people had too much. Where people threw away what you’d kill for today.”
This I feel is the foundation of the modern, post 9/11, world we live in.
A side thought… Parents and grandparents… consider being in a position where you are fleeing certain death. Could be famine or war, but you are fleeing. Your baby is ill. You realise that to survive you are going to have to leave the infant behind. Do you put the child “out of it’s misery” before you leave it or do you simply walk away and close your ears to its crying?
Such a choice is not unknown to a huge population of our planet.
Events that define…
I have always felt a certain fortuosity in that I have lived trough such interesting times. A “product of the 60s” I can only thank my lucky stars that I got to be a passenger in that “magic bus” ride that so, so defined the rest of my generation’s life. I have been privileged to be a part of the development of a new, young country. I have traveled extensively and interacted with may cultures and peoples. I have been bruised, battered, beaten but not K.O.’d. And now have my next generation of players I get to lay my hands on and assist in their forward progress.
And 9/11 will forever be an event we “recognise” as important.
I teach the pups that 9/11 is the day the western-world got woken up…

Have Tom and Jerry on the tube. It is one of the few programs we can all agree on.
Dylan is in the kitchen with his mother. They are singing and playing and his laughter is infectious. Little ditties about Noah and his ark, the fishy swimming up the stream. He is quite cute.
Angelina needed so much attention this afternoon that she came down with a fever. We dosed her up with drugs and she slept a while then jumped up and started playing again. She and Mendozza started doing “karate” at one point and I do believe she made him cry a third time today. He did it quietly, like a man, and pretended it never happened, like a man. Somewhere in the proceedings Angelina went up and kissed Mendozza full on the mouth. We all laughed and Mendozza got a bit grumpy, just like a man. She is down and out in front of the tube.
After expanding an amazing amount of energy, and with great difficulty, when Mendozza lays down, even for a microsecond, he passes out. He is out cold on the sofa.
Angelo is laughing to the antics of the animated characters. He’s got a nice blanket and a pile of pillows so, like a good comfort seeking hound, he’s set for the night.
It has been a pretty full on day. Before supper we were all jumping off the furniture. Dylan climbs up on something about his tit-level high then launches himself, arms and legs akimbo, and lands uninjured… so far.
We rigged a new swing today that Dylan can manage by himself. Luckily I am from Iowa and have my prerequisite wrestling mats on hand so we can put a mat under him so no permanent damage can happen.
So, at 9pm, the oldest and the youngest are still awake. We’ve had no real emergencies. We have by and large laughed all day. And managed to get ice cream twice.
And its all good fun.

The SI government lifted the four-year ban on the trade of dolphins in 2007.
ABOUT 25 bottlenose dolphins worth millions of dollars will be exported out of the country destined for China, Tuesday next week.
This was revealed to the Solomon Star yesterday by Earth Island Institute regional director and dolphin activist Lawrence Makili.Mr Makili said he has received reports that Dr Badley Anita who operates a dolphin business on Mbugana Island, Central Province was planning the export.
It was understood the Ministry of Environment issued an export license to Dr Anita on Thursday this week.
However, Mr Makili said this was done illegally as the Fisheries Ministry has not issued any business license to dolphin operators this year.
Therefore, Mr Makili said the Environment Ministry has issued an illegal license to an illegal business operator.
“Under whose directive was the license issued for the export,” Mr Makili questioned.
“The Fisheries Ministry has never given a dolphin business license to dolphin operators this year but yet the Environment Ministry sees fit to allocate an export license to Dr Anita.”
Mr Makili said the planned export would have a negative impact on the two proposed canneries Don Wong and Frabelle tuna companies that were planning to establish in the country.
In April this year, members of Don Wong held a meeting with the Government about their interest in operating in the country.
And one of the main issues discussed was to address the issue of dolphin trade in the country.
Mr Makili said the planned export could jeopardise efforts of tuna investment in the country.
Meanwhile, Mr Makili challenged the Minister of Environment to step in and revoke the permit.
“I’m calling on the minister to step in and investigate this matter because why does the ministry issue an export licence for dolphins to be exported to benefit only a few people; a decision that could risk a tuna cannery that aims to provide thousands of jobs for Solomon Islanders,” Mr Makili said.
Attempts to talk with officials from both ministries and Dr Anita were unsuccessful when this paper went to press last night.
In 2007, 28 live dolphins were also exported to Dubai; four years after a similar shipment to Mexico sparked an international outcry in 2003.
The Government lifted a four-year ban on the trade of dolphins in 2007 although there was a public outcry from local and international conservation groups against exportation of live dolphins.

Is good fer the soul. Now, my question is: Can you have a lazy Saturday with 4 kids and a pool?
I think so. You do though have to watch 2 yr old Dylan who will do a “Houdini” on you. I went upstairs at one point, got what I wanted and came back, he was up the stairs behind me, unnoticed by anyone. About noon he filled his drawers and everyone started running from him, he spelt so bad. Even the dogs wouldn’t play with him. He kept swinging as we speculated how nice a warm load in your shorts would feel…
Mendozza is a bit too daring and I do see some problems with the flying-fox and his need to get as close to the apex as possible. He started crying twice today and each time it was when someone banged an existing scab or bruise. He loves showing off his injuries.
Angelo is a very good young man in kids clothing. He has s a quiet streak but, though not a strong leader, he is a great manager once he’s been given his instructions.
Angelina is a drama queen but cute as hell. After one of the dramas (I call them attention deficit sessions … she needs attention so has a session) I brushed her hair out. Now I am not the most gentle of grooms and she did squeak a bit, and it took a while, but it was good for us both.
We managed to get most to crash after lunch, about 2. About 6pm now so I should go see if there is more fun to be had.
Life is good..

Heavily clouded skies dominate. Temps a few degrees above freezing. I sit outside. The night is still but well chilled. It will freeze before the morning comes. It rained a lot today. Sun came out in the afternoon. Radiant heat everywhere. Was glorious. Down right balmy. But in the rain? And on a still night?
On a still night, sounds carry. The chill has a hummm. If you have ever been in cold… people have divergent concepts of cold. Have you ever been in, say, -45, that’s cold. If you have you will remember a hummm that may be the absence of sound. Not even sound can service at -45.
There is a dampness in the air. My wooly hat. Fingerless gloves. Wooly scarf tight around the neck. Maintain adequate body heat. I sweat when I climb hills here. And pant and wheeze. I need to get to 6000 feet. Just to see how it feels. Hmmm…. Go for a ride. Have a look around.
I hear a dog. There are many dogs here. All well behaved. My dogs would not be acceptable. Not nearly socialized enough. The kids here are good. All well socialized. The environment is good for kids. And dogs. I like it alot. Even the chill in the air. Maybe, especially the chill in the air?
